Basketball with a Twist...

To make things a little more interesting, we've added a few rules of our own. In addition to the conventional rules of the game of basketball, the following will be in play to add an unusual twist to the night. With these additions, it's really anybody's game.

  1. At least one woman must be on the floor at all times.
  2. Each team will get 2, 60 second timeouts per half.
  3. Clock will continue to run except on team or referee timeouts and fouls.
  4. Fouls will result in other team getting the ball.
  5. Multiple point” zones will be setup on court as per the diagram below (please forgive the crude drawing).
  6. At referee discretion, there will be a 2 minute period during each half where an extra ball will be thrown onto the court. Each team may add an extra player.
  7. At referee discretion, there will be a 2 minute period during each half where all baskets made must be in the form of a granny shot. This requires ball being shot underhand from at or below the waist.
  8. Mittens may be worn by one member of each team. Any baskets made by this player will be counted as double.
  9. All other “regular” basketball rules apply (unless stated above) and are up to interpretation by referee squad.

The Organization

The Amakhaya-Rethabile Children's Community Project was started by Mrs Elenor Joyce Naicker in Johannesburg South Africa in 1995. Originally started as an outreach of Youth for Christ South Africa, Amakhaya is now run by "Aunty Joyce" and a dedicated group of volunteers. Currently there are 33 children living in the house between the ages of 3 and 18.

Amakhaya is a Zulu word that means "homes for the homeless" or "our home". Rethabile comes from the name of the first child to go through the program. the Amakhaya-Rethabile Children's Community Project has a partnership with Madiba Primary school, a local school in the area named after Nelson Mandela. For further information about the organization, please email Mrs. Naicker at ejnaicker@gmail.com
